Beating change fatigue: A leader’s checklist

Change can be exhausting for teams. The challenge for leaders is helping people cope with it.

Use this quick checklist to support your team during periods of change.

Build trust

  • Be open and transparent about what’s happening
  • Show your human side and acknowledge uncertainty
  • Give people autonomy and trust them to make decisions
  • Offer flexibility where possible to help manage work-life balance and reduce pressure

Show you care

  • Check in with people regularly — not just about work
  • Recognise effort and progress — small gestures can have a big impact on morale
  • Listen to concerns and act on feedback

Create a sense of belonging

  • Encourage collaboration and connection within the team
  • Help people support each other through change
  • Recognise individuals for their strengths and contributions

Remove barriers

  • Identify processes or bureaucracy slowing the team down
  • Remove unnecessary steps so people can focus on what matters

Connect work to purpose

  • Help people see the bigger picture
  • Explain why the change matters
  • Create a sense of meaning and impact

Keep communicating

  • Provide regular updates, even when there’s little news
  • Encourage questions and open discussion
  • Create a safe space for people to raise concerns
